MARINE DYNAMICS AND SHIP LABORATORY,

CANADA

NATIONAL RESEARCH COUNCIL, Bldg . M-22,

OTTAWA, ONTARIO., K1A OR6. (613) 993-2288 Telex 053-3386

TOWING TANKS , SEAKEEPING AND MANOEUVRING BASINS
DESCRIPTION OF CARRIAGES: outdoor basin, no carriages fitted

WAVE GENERATION CAPABILITY: regular, length 2-15 m, slope 1-10 deg.

WAVEMAKER TYPE AND EXTENT: 8 synchronized pneumatic wavemakers on one 61 m side

BEACH TYPE AMD LENGTH: 4 perforated panels on parabolic arc. 6 m

WAVE MEASVREHENT: 8 fixed ultrasonic probes on struts 0.6 m below

water surface equispaced across basin

INSTRUMENTATION : radio-controlled models with digital radio telemetry link to shore-based minicomputer data acquisition system. 30 channels at 25 samples/sec each all data recorded on digital magnetic tape

MODEL SIZE RANGE: ship lengths from 3 to 4.5 m floating structures from 1 to 2 m diameter

MODEL TRACKING TECHNIQUES : two telescopes automatically track light source on model and yaw gyro in model measures heading . minicomputer plots model track continuously duping tests.

TESTS PERFORMED: (1) manoeuvring tests.

(2) seakeeping and propulsion tests at all headings in long-crested waves.

(3) motions and loads on moored ships and floating structures.

(4) dynamic stability and capsizing tests.
